Concept of Aldar Headquarters
It was in the year 2005 that the original concept of the structure was made. There is no doubt that this construction done by MZ Architects has played an important role in expanding the skyline of Abu Dhabi permanently. According to Marwan Zgheib, the architect, it is the simplicity of this monument that helps to make it so attractive at present. His objective was to compete with the architecture of the UAE by creating an iconic project known for its simplicity as well as a powerful presence.
A couple of massive circular curved glass walls evoking an open shell were imagined by the architect in the initial stages. This kind of thinking resulted in the formation of a skyscraper with a pure geometric shape that has made this region quite popular these days.
The Architecture of Aldar Headquarters
The unique circular shape of the Aldar Headquarters symbolizes infinity, stability, unity, and rationality. When one visualizes this amazing skyscraper over the open waters, it might appear that it represents a gem resting on the sand. Interestingly, this piece of architecture appears to be remarkable when seen from close as well as from a distance.
While creating this structure, the architects had to give special emphasis on the stability of the project which is primarily because of its circular shape. However, they were able to accomplish the project successfully after being able to look at the couple of points where the establishment will come in contact with the ground providing stability in the long run. As a matter of fact, the sphere happens to be a flawless and ideal form of architecture right now.
Deriving inspiration from the circle
It is noteworthy that the Aldar Headquarters is a significant milestone in architecture since it is the first circular building in the Middle East. It is an example of the application of the concept of the circle in contemporary design, which is a departure from the conventional rectangular and angular structures that we are accustomed to seeing. The building’s unique design and innovative architecture have won numerous awards and accolades worldwide, making it a must-visit attraction for tourists visiting Abu Dhabi. The circle has indeed inspired architects to explore new dimensions in design, and the Aldar Headquarters is a testament to the possibilities of circular-based structures.
Construction
-
The process
Engineers and architects started working in collaboration with only 30 months to go for covering the Formula One Grand Prix inauguration in Abu Dhabi. While doing so, they had to encounter lots of complexities and challenges.
-
Fusion of the roof and the façade
The typical structure of the roof presented some challenges to the architects while constructing this circular building. This building depends to a great extent on a continuous structural and glass band stitching together the two main facets and thus forming a continuous and slim surface that is horizontal and vertical. In this way, this lateral element was responsible for creating the merging of the roof and the façade flawlessly.
-
The curvature of the façade
The usage of a diagonal grid of steel provided stability to this particular structure which is circular in shape. Apart from reducing the impacts made by the steel frame on the façade, it was also responsible for inflating the entire structure in the long run. In this way, there is no need for the installation of internal columns thanks to the presence of the innovative diagrid system. This was responsible for enhancing the efficiency of the structure and offering astounding layout flexibility as well. In spite of having only 23 floors, the Aldar Headquarters comprises a floor area that of a tower that is 40 stories high.
It was somewhat difficult to execute the curved glass skin within the structure. However, it was solved with the introduction of triangular flat glass pieces which were combined into shapes resembling that of a diamond.
The good thing is that it is feasible to view the sunrise as well as the sunset in the glass of this remarkable piece of architecture at present. Apart from reflecting the surrounding areas of the project, the glass facades likewise enable an individual to see his own reflection in a much bigger space.
