All About Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the star attraction of Abu Dhabi. Visitors all around the globe are wonder struck by the ornate grandeur of this majestic architecture. It is now the third largest mosque in the whole world and the area would cover four football fields. The mosque can hold 40,000 worshipers and bags a place in the Guinness book of records for the biggest chandelier and the largest hand woven carpet. The mosque gets its name from Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who was the first president and the ruler of Abu Dhabi. He had wished it to be the resting place for his body after death for which he was buried at his death in 2004, in the mosque’s courtyard.

Visiting Time

Here is a detailed schedule for a visit to the mosque.

  • The time for visiting this phenomenal work of architecture is from Saturday to Thursday.
  • The timing is between 9 AM to 10 PM.
  • On Friday mornings the mosque is open only to worshipers. It reopens for tourists only at 4.30 PM.
  • During the month of Ramadan, the mosque remains closed all day on Fridays and the visiting hours are from 9 AM to 2 PM.

Dress Code

The mosque like all other mosques in UAE follows a specific dress code for men and women.

  • Men should wear ankle length dress or trousers.
  • Shorts are never allowed.
  • Shoulders and leg should remain covered.
  • The dress should not be clinging or transparent; it should be easy flowing and loose.
  • Women should wear ankle length dresses, free flowing and loose and never clinging or transparent clothes.
  • They have to cover their hair.
  • In case they do not carry a veil or scarf, they can borrow one at the entrance and give it back on exit.
  • Shoes cannot be worn inside the mosque and should be kept outside.
  • They may keep shoes in bags and keep them somewhere outside.
